BC Energy owns and manages the operations of a cogeneration plant, the Burrstone Energy CHP Plant, that supports a community microgrid serving a regional hospital, nursing home, and college campus. The plant encompasses four gas reciprocating engines with an output capacity of 3.6 MW of 13.2 kV electricity (7000 lbs/hr of steam and 700 gpm hot water).

BC Energy manages the day-to-day operations and maintenance, purchases commodities, and provides administration of the plant. BC Energy formulated an “Economic Dispatch Algorithm,” which factors gas pricing, facility loads, maintenance costs, contract terms, and hourly National Grid and NYISO kWh pricing and export kWh rates to makes hourly decisions on how to efficiently operate the plant.
