This microgrid provides highly efficient and reliable cogenerated energy to a group of neighboring institutions, the Burrstone Energy Center features three 1100 kW and one 334 kW natural gas-fired reciprocating engines to produce electricity, steam, and hot water. A groundbreaking project in New York State, the CHP plant supports a community microgrid 300-bed hospital, a 200-bed nursing home and a 3000-student college campus. Burrstone Energy Center is also the first CHP plant of its size in Upstate New York to export power back to utility.
