Albany Medical Center was undergoing a large-scale expansion project and expected its energy consumption to escalate. To meet the new demand, BC Energy developed a solution that gave the hospital firmer control over costs, a reliable source of energy, and opportunities for growth.
Challenged by building on a hilly, densely urban site occupied by steam pipes crossing overhead on piers and an operating daycare center, BC Energy phased construction around the active uses. The 2-story, 23,000 SF plant was constructed one half at a time.
Today, the cogeneration plant supplies more than half of the electricity and the majority of the steam consumed by the hospital and provides back-up service during outages.
